Half-n-half weekend

A quiet Friday night, albeit muggy, lows in the 60s.

Saturday, expect a few generic thundershowers between Noon and 6pm, and small hail could be seen (not severe level/size). Highs in the low 80s.

Sunday, looking just dandy like cotton candy 🙂 Highs near 85F.

Enjoy 🙂

Tornado Watch

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/

The link is clickable inside the site too. It reaffirms my concerns about today.

Here’s what you need to know:
A tornado WATCH has been issued for Central New York, until 9PM this evening, and covers southern New York right up (north) up to and including the Rome/Utica ThruWay. Any Watch means, “You need to pay attention to [whatever the topic of the Watch], so you need to be concerned. It is NOT YET a Warning for any County in the area, so it is not yet time to ACT. However, this IS the time to PREPARE. How? Choose a room (preferably a basement, next choice an interior bathroom with a tub). Everyone in the home needs to know this is the destination. Next, get a blanket, a radio (preferably battery operated, because power may go out), and a few candles/flashlight and bring them to the destination. Last, turn UP the TV and pay attention through this evening. If you hear me say “Warning” for YOUR County, THAT is the time to act/go to the destination, put the blanket over you and get in the tub/basement. At that point, use the radio to stay up on when the threat is over, because the TV power may go out. I go into great detail NOT to frighten anyone, but to PREPARE everyone for whatever the particular worst case-scenario is. Please stay up on weather coverage, and I will try to use every media outlet to do so for you.

Severe storms again?

Severe storms Thursday?

The National Weather Service (NWS) has split our area into “low risk” or “moderate risk” for severe storms Thursday afternoon. Here’s the chart, and the risk is again highest for wind and hail.

Here’s the chart:

Storm damage!

If you’re interested in such, I have a complied list of damage here at home and across the state, from last night’s storms. The severe reports were either (straight line) wind damage, or hail sightings, but as with lightning storms, there were numerous power outages from transformer overloads. While there are a few storms out there today, it will all quiet down and clear up this evening, for sure.  Here are the reports:

Hot stuff

Another unusually hot/humid day for Central new York today. (I thought CNY was suppose to have cool Summers with low humidity?!) We nearly got to a record, touching 92F today, with the record being 95F. Good news is that cooler and less humid air is headed this way, and will stick around all of the week, into the weekend.

I should make you aware that there will be scattered storms out and about tonight, and conditions are favorable enough for a few to reach severe criteria…and again severe critieria involves any of these components..either 3/4″ hail, wind in excess of 59 mph, flooding rain, or a tornado. In my mind, I don’t really see any of these happening, but a few strong ones could be seen, if not severe.

One final note, there is a (minor) meteor shower coming our way in about a week, and I will keep you abreast of that and of weather conditions for viewing it.

A Hall of Fame weekend!

While there is a small chance for a thundershower later Sunday, it isnt likely, and less so for our friends in Cooperstown. So other than Sunday PM and maybe Monday, rain free weather continues…(and we could really use the rain now.) Clouds from Friday will clear out for a mostly sunny Saturday, and a partly sunny Sunday, highs in the lower 80s. There is a cool/dry shot coming our way again, for Tuesday, lasting through Thursday. So look forward to that 🙂

I hope you’ve found and bookmarked my new additions to the weather page on CNYHomepage.com!

http://cnyhomepage.com/weather/astronomy

There’s a meteor shower coming for the end of the month, so NOW is the time to familiarize yourself with it and start bookmarking!

Enjoy the weekend, I hope it’s a H.o.F. weekend for you!

IT’S HERE!!!

Exciting news!

Thanks to a little help from our Webmaster, you now have several tools at your disposal to do some serious sky watching! If you go to our homepage, CNYHompage.com, and click on the Weather tab, and then choose “Astronomy”, you can choose from three great links to cover everything you want to know about the Earth and the cosmos! Over time, I will improve it further, but this is a great start, and one I’ve been wanting to do since we hit the air last September!

here is the link, please do bookmark it, and enjoy early and often!

Some exciting news…

For those of us who are Astronomy buffs, (and wouldnt that be most of us?), I have some exciting news! A new addition is coming to CNYHompage.com, in a day or two. Under the Weather tab, you’ll be finding some astronomy links under a tab by the same name. Once there, you can easily find out when meteor showers are due, solar and lunar eclipses, solar flare activity, and the latest astronomy news! Now you won’t have to go anywhere else to get all the news of the cosmos!

I’ll post a link directly to this, when it is up and running 🙂

We got “Ickey-Sticky”, and several events coming up now…

Hot stuff for Tuesday, temps into the 90s. Beyond that, somewhat cooler and much less humid weather for Thursday through Saturday. The record for Tuesday, is 92F, set in 1982. We may break it.

As for (several) events coming up, first, there is a FREE planetarium show in 2 days, and another in August, so if you don’t get the free passes to Wednesday night’s event, you can go for it in August. Here’s the link:

http://employees.oneonta.edu/smolinjp/planetarium.html#schedule

Also, a meteor shower is coming our way at the end of this month, the Delta Aquarids. It’s not a big one, but it whets your whistle for one of the biggest of the year, in mid August. I’ll have more on both in the coming weeks.

Very tranquil, typical Summer weather

While skies have gone dry for the past 3 weeks, otherwise, very typical weather continues. I see no organized rain events, which means that we rely on diurnal (daytime heating) thunderstorms, which are random in nature, and depend on the combination of enough heat and enough humidity to form. Well, that combination is not forecast to come to fruition until Saturday at the earliest, and maybe not until Sunday or Monday afternoons. So, until then, it is sunny warm days (80s-90) and clear mild nights (50s-60), with a slow warming trend and a slow increase in humidity over time.
